Breast Cancer Awareness month is celebrated each October. Breast Cancer is something that has impacted so many of us. As a general surgeon who performs a lot of breast surgery, this month means so much. I strive to provide compassionate care to patients and their families as we navigate their treatment plan, surgery, and post-operative care. Breast Cancer Awareness Month allows us all to come together to support a common goal: The fight against Breast Cancer.
“As a surgeon, it is never easy to share with my patients the devastating news that they have cancer. In the blink of an eye, three small words are a game changer. The conversation that unfolds affects my patient’s health as emotions of anxiety, fear and panic start to flood in. This is the moment when our bond takes hold, the bond of a breast surgeon and a breast cancer patient. This bond is so important as the journey for survival begins.
October is Breast Cancer Awareness month, a special time where we come together to support those in battle, increase awareness, focus on the importance of early detection, share educational information and celebrate amazing survival stories. I am moved by the strength and resilience survivors show while sharing their stories to help others. I am grateful for their voice as they help us spread the word on the importance of an annual mammography. Breast Cancer Awareness month gives me inspiration that I share throughout the year with my patients.”
